Poodles - Puppies - HistoryAccording to scientists, Poodles are one of the oldest breeds. However, there is no agreement as to the origin of the breed. Some people state that the Poodle originates from the dogs that were used to herd cattle. Others claim that the ancestors of Poodles were used to help sailors moor and retrieve waterfowl. The Poodle is probably the cross of these two types of dogs. Breed qualities say in favor of this theory. The Poodle has two coat types. Besides, it displays the traits inherent to both a herding dog and a retriever. The Poodle is intelligent and alert, and has strong liking for water and retrieving things.Numerous drawings of the breed depict the dogs with specific clips. Most dogs had coat on the neck and shoulders. This clip was obviously intended to protect the dog from the cold water. The types of clips changed throughout the history of the breed. It is interesting to know that the clip played a significant role in popularization of the Poodle. It is estimated that the modern version of the clip created in 1925 was instrumental in promoting the breed. A beautiful dog with a neatly trimmed coat charmed many people. Since the exact place of origin has been unknown, many countries attempted to adopt the breed as their national symbol. Thus, Germany, France, and some other countries were the rivals for a long time. Finally, France was recognized as the official place of breed origin. The AKC recognized Poodles in 1887.
